Thank you very much.
Thank you, thank you for the very warm welcome.
My name is Steve Jobs and I'm a CEO.
First off today, thank you for such a warm welcome in Paris.
We are really glad to be here.
So first today I want to give you a brief update on some recent things we've introduced
and then I want to get into the heart of the presentation.
So for the update to start with, first of all I just wanted to make sure you knew about
the new 17-inch iMac.
It's got a 17-inch display on it that is extraordinary.
It's the same viewing area as a 19-inch cathode ray tube display.
It's huge and it's landscape.
It has 1440 by 900 pixels, which is 64% more than the 15-inch iMac.
It's like nothing else on the market.
So rather than seeing this, you can see this.
It's really something.
And it's powered graphically by an NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX graphics chip.
So it's really, really fast graphics.
And it has a super drive so that you can burn your own DVDs that play in almost any DVD
player built in.
Extraordinary product.
If you haven't seen one, please go to the booth today and see one.
And we sell them in Europe for $21.99.
That's before taxes. Different governments add different tax rates.
But this is what we sell them for before taxes.
And I would suggest you take a look at one. It's just a wonderful, wonderful computer.
In addition, we introduced the eMac recently, and it sells for $11.99, but we just introduced
a second model that has a SuperDrive.
This is the lowest cost way to burn DVDs in the entire marketplace.
So you can make your own DVDs in this eMac, and it sells for $16.99.
And we're constantly trying to drive the price of the SuperDrive lower and lower,
because burning DVDs is so wonderful.
So the new eMac.
Next is the iPod.
The iPod for us has been a giant hit.
And we have three models of the iPod now.
The 5GB, the 10GB, and the 20GB iPod.
And so you can have 1,000, 2,000, or up to 4,000 songs in your pocket on an iPod.
And these are the prices we sell them at.
These include, I think, French VAT.
So again, lower and lower prices on the iPods.
The two top models come with a carrying case and a remote control,
and the software is new in them as well.
We've included the ability to browse your music by some new ways.
So we have artists, albums, and songs from before, but now we also have genres and composers.
And so for genres, you can browse your music by classical or country or jazz.
And if you like classical music, you can browse it by composers instead of just performers,
which is a really wonderful way to find your music.
In addition, the iPods also store contacts, and they now store your calendar data too.
and we'll talk more about that later.
So the new iPods are pretty wonderful, and they're hitting the shelves now.
We also introduced an iPod for Windows.
We felt like our friends on the Windows side of the world were being left out,
and we wanted to send them some iPods to get them familiar with Apple
so that someday they can see that maybe our products are better than the ones on the Windows side.
And we chose Music Match as the jukebox to work with. Music Match, it's not iTunes, but it's the best one on the Windows side. And so that's the new iPods that we have.
And lastly, we introduced some new Power Macintoshes recently, the fastest Macs ever made.
And they use XServe technology, which is this technology that we use in our servers.
And it's very, very fast. It's a dual processor.
The processors each have very large L3 caches, very fast architecture, very fast I.O. through the disk drives, etc.
And this XServe architecture is a first for the Power Macs.
And the key word is dual.
Everything about...
the PowerMax is dual. So we have dual optical drives for the first time, you can have two
optical drives. They all come with dual display cards, so you can drive up to, you can drive
two displays all the way up to dual 23-inch cinema displays off one PowerMax like this,
and of course they have dual processors. And the three models are dual 867, dual 1 GHz,
and dual 1.25, and these are the prices. And they're really, really fast machines.
So this is what we have that is new in the systems area and all of it is at the booth.
You can go see it.
But what I want to spend the rest of my time talking about is software.
Often we focus on the hardware and Apple does make the best hardware in our industry.
But we also make the best software.
And software really is the soul of the machine.
So I want to spend the rest of the time starting with Jagwire
and talking about our operating system and our application software.
So Jaguar is the latest release of Mac OS X.
And I think it's fair to say that after three releases of Mac OS X, 10.0, 10.1, and now Jaguar Mac OS X.2,
Mac OS X has finally arrived.
It's phenomenal.
And if you're not running Jaguar, I'd strongly suggest you go out immediately and buy a copy.
Because it's the best thing we've ever done in software.
And I would go check it out.
So Jaguar has over 150 major new features to it.
And I'd like to show you a bunch of them today.
Now, we're Unix-based.
Mac OS X is based on Unix, industrial-strength Unix.
And you may not know it, but Apple has become the number one Unix supplier in the world.
Bigger than Linux, bigger than Solaris, bigger than anything.
Strange, huh?
But true.
And we've improved our Unix quite a bit in macOS 10.2.
We've added free BSD 4.4, new compiler with GCC3,
and a bunch of technical stuff that you can learn about on the website.
and I won't cover here, but the Unix is now
even better than it was and I think we have
arguably one of the best Unixes in the world now.
Very secure, very fast, very powerful.
Funny enough, we've also added more support for
working in a Windows environment because a lot of our customers
connect their Macs into Windows networks with Windows servers
and we've added SMB browsing and Active Directory support
So you can now go plug a Mac right into a Windows network and it just works.
And it's really great.
We've also added VPN support.
So if you're on the road and want to access your email, you can do that as well.
So a lot better Windows support.
We've also improved support for running old Mac OS 9 apps in Classic.
This is the environment in Mac OS 10 that will run old Mac OS 9 applications.
And it runs them surprisingly fast.
in some cases faster than natively on OS 9 itself.
Now, we've all had the launch Classic,
and it used to take a long time, 18 months ago.
It's now really fast.
In Jaguar, it launches Classic twice as fast as before.
So it launches on our new Power Max, as an example,
in 8 to 10 seconds.
It's very, very fast.
We have better compatibility.
We have the ability to use USB peripherals now.
