Recognize the cost of deferred payment
Preserving cash today can be valuable, but a future commitment remains a cost.
A supplier may accept less now in exchange for more after a defined result. Such an arrangement can share risk and preserve an opportunity. Both sides must understand the condition and accept the uncertainty. Make the commitment clear rather than hiding its cost.
Distinguish a future fee from ownership. Equity can remain valuable long after a single task ends. Do not treat a noncash payment as free. Compare the lasting commitment with the contribution you receive.
The same principle applies to relief during financial pressure. A delayed payment or new loan may give you time. It does not automatically reduce what the company owes.
