Understand how the buyer decides
A good sale helps the buyer obtain something they value.
Selling belongs to the founder’s work. You sell an offer to customers, a mission to future teammates, and an opportunity to investors. In each case, the other person has a decision to make. Understand that decision before pushing your preferred answer.
Listen for both practical and emotional motives. One buyer may need a measurable saving. Another may value confidence, simplicity, identity, or the feeling of owning something well made. Technical superiority does not automatically decide the purchase.
Ask what the person is trying to achieve. Understand the present alternative and what makes a change worthwhile. A sale becomes easier to explain when the benefit is specific. Your enthusiasm cannot substitute for the buyer’s reason to act.
