Today's Macworld conference in San Francisco.
Our Corey Johnson is at the event where Jobs finished speaking just a little while ago.
He joins us with the story.
And it figures that a couple weeks ago I got an iPod and now there's one that's smaller and cheaper, right?
Ron, you've got to stand a cutting edge, man.
You've got to be on a bleeding edge.
But before we get to the hardware...
What do you do at Christmas time?
Well, you shop and you keep shopping.
It doesn't end.
Yeah, it's true.
You know, we're going to talk about hardware.
I'm going to show you some of the new Apple hardware.
But before we get to that, I want to mention software, because software is really the key to Apple's innovations,
and an opinion of many people who follow these things, a way that Apple stays ahead of Microsoft and Microsoft's OS.
No more so than an announcement about Search today, and a way that Apple Search is going to stay ahead of Google.
Because the OS can let Spotlight know when something changes, it instantly updates when things change.
You don't have to run another search. You don't have to wait 10 minutes.
You can be looking at a result, a little change right in front of you if the underlying files change because the OS can notify Spotlight that that's happened instantly.
So that's where we've got cutting-edge search technology.
But, of course, everyone's excited about the hardware, and I have some of that hardware right here.
This is really cool.
This is the Mac Mini just introduced.
It is $499.
This is it.
Steve Jobs is saying that this is a BYOMKM.
Bring your own.
Sorry, BYOMKM.
So bring your own mouse, keyboard and monitor.
But for $499, you get 40 gigabytes of storage capacity.
You get 1.25 gigahertz, a really powerful drive.
Lots of jacks in the back to use the thing.
And it's just a spectacular little computer for people that's actually cheaper than some of the iPods.
Now, I mentioned the iPods.
Here's the other piece of excitement here.
This is a new iPod.
They're calling this the iPod shuffle.
Look at the size of this thing.
Yes, I'm true.
It's true that I'm bigger than the average human, but this thing is tiny.
This little thing can be as cheap as $99.
It plugs right into your computer with a USB port and lets you dump a couple of songs in here,
I think 125 songs, and plays them through a shuffle process, works with your Macintosh software.
Here's what Steve Jobs had to say about this new iPod shuffle.
This is the new iPod shuffle.
Take off the cap, click it right on, you're set to go.
This is really cool.
Look at that little thing here.
You can see it turns green when you've got it on in the back, so you can see when it's working.
But these new products at Apple look exciting, and some numbers out from Apple as well,
showing that their business is going phenomenally well.
Stores open, songs sold, iPods sold, all these numbers ahead of analysts' expectations,
as announced here today at Macworld.
Ron?
So, Corey, you can hang that thing around your neck while you're running on the treadmill or something and listen away?
Yeah, or while I'm on the air. I can pretend to be listening to Denise in my ear.
I can actually be listening to you.
Yeah, you and me both. We'll explain to the viewers who Denise is, our producer, whom we sometimes listen to and sometimes not.
Best not to ignore her.
No, it is best not to ignore her. Depends what kind of mood she's in, though.
All right, thanks, Corey. Once again, we're waiting on Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
We expect to be able to talk with him in the next hour, so please stay tuned to hear from him.
Well, there is a new case of mad cow disease up north, and the EU and U.S.
have sent to share.
Smithfield Foods, McDonald's, and Yum!
Brands moving fractionally today.
All right, Apple's CEO has just finished a speech focusing on the future of his company
and the future of technology.
We expect that Steve Jobs will join us later in the hour, so stay with us for that.
Let's take a look now at shares of Apple Computer.
Don't know whether that had anything to do with the speech or not, but down $3 and
change nonetheless at $65.77.
But over the past six months, shares have almost doubled.
Today, Jobs was talking about Apple's new product line.
This is the new iPod Shuffle.
Take off the cap.
Click it right on.
You're set to go.
Amazing little device.
We hope to speak with Mr. Jobs sometime later this hour.
Stock is very heavily traded, by the way, down almost 5%.
Intel also...
...com on MSN.
And fresh from his keynote address at the Mac World Conference...
We bring you a first on CNBC interview with Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs.
He joins us now live in San Francisco.
Mr. Jobs, welcome. It's always great to have you on CNBC.
It's great to be here.
Tell us a little bit about this flash memory.
What is it called? The iPod Shuffle, which is the latest in your family of iPods.
I mean, practically every kid in my son's class, including my son, got one for Christmas.
That's great.
Well, we've got something new that's even more affordable.
This is the new iPod Shuffle.
It's about the size of a pack of gum, and it weighs less than an ounce.
And it's pretty...
It's really amazing.
It holds either, there's one model that holds about 120 songs and another that holds
240 songs.
And it even comes with a lanyard so you can take off the cap on the bottom and just
plug it right in here and wear it around your neck and plug the headphones in.
So it works basically the same way as the iPod does but it has a lower price point,
holds fewer songs, right?
It holds fewer songs and it has a price point of just $99 for the 120 song model.
But it works a little differently.
There's an explosive phenomenon in the iPod marketplace in the last year, which
is people started to listen to their songs by turning on shuffle and letting the iPod
shuffle up the next song.
Well, the iPod shuffle is built around that concept.
So you load in your 120 songs or 240 songs and it will just shuffle up the next one
so you don't have to look at a teeny weeny little display and you don't have to fumble
around to try to find your next song.
It just shuffles up the next song for you.
It's really fantastic.
So I guess, Mr. Jobs, based on the success of the iPod,
you're learning new things.
I mean, you learn that people were using the shuffle function,
and that was one of the bases for this new product.
Let me ask you about the battery.
And I only ask because I know that in the past,
