Use feedback to improve the work
Give specific feedback soon enough for the person to use it.
People often avoid saying something uncomfortable in ordinary social life. A company also needs clear information about work quality. The leader must learn to provide that information without turning every correction into a personal attack.
Describe the behavior and its effect. Explain what needs to change. Keep the standard consistent so people do not have to guess which version of your expectations applies today.
Ask what the person was trying to achieve. Understand the information they had and why they chose that action. Their explanation may reveal weak instructions, missing context, or a process that creates errors.
Listening does not mean that every explanation is sufficient. The work still needs a result. End the conversation with a clear understanding of what happens next and who owns it.
Discuss difficult matters privately when public criticism would humiliate the person without helping the work. Harsh behavior does not become effective management because a famous leader practiced it. If you give feedback badly, recognize the error and improve your conduct.
Protect the flow of truthful information
Authority can make information less honest before it reaches you. People may soften bad news, avoid disagreement, or protect their position. A leader who receives only reassurance can lose contact with the company.
Ask questions that allow a different answer from the one you expect. Keep relationships with people who can challenge your judgment. Treat useful disagreement as information rather than disloyalty.
Give the team difficult facts with care and precision. Distinguish what you know, what remains uncertain, and which decision comes next. People cannot respond intelligently to a reality you conceal.
Different audiences need different detail. However, the team should not discover essential operating facts through rumor. Confidence should come from a clear response to the situation, not from denying the situation.
